Momentum is a force that shapes and reshapes the world. Oceans. Glaciers. Evolution. It is a force inherent in nature, and indeed it is one of the key ingredients which makes activism work. Scientists study it. Movements seek it. Empires fear it.
More potent still, is the quiet dance of resonance; a graceful merger of momentum and adaptability. We see it in a spider attuned to its web, in the flock of birds that moves as one, and sometimes more and more frequently now we see it in ourselves and the humanity around us as we flirt with the evoloution of consciousness.
Einstein said that a problem could not be solved by the same level of consciousness which created the problem in the first place. The need for this paradigm shift is what prompted the formation of groups like ACT. Where do we fit in? Think of the mass demonstrations as group interventions for governments and corporations, addicted to weapons technology, profit, and war. We're here to help them kick the habit.
If we are sensitive enough to the world around us, the changes in our political environments are palpable. Fear is a projection from a man behind a curtain, just as it was in the Wizard of Oz. And like Dorothy, and her diverse companions, we too can stand up to the empty threats and sabre-rattling of tyranny. Yes, there are some threats that tyrants may make good on, but only as many as we let them. Empires have been stopped in their tracks. Consciousness has blossomed on massive scales before, as it is now. However, the movements that are on the verge of being born will be qualitatively different from what has come before. We are on the cusp of a new way of thinking - a new way of being.
We are both witnessing and participating in the emergence of Full Spectrum Resistance: the globalization of dissent; the coalescing of cultures; the achievement of a substantive activist media presence in radio, in print, on television, and beyond. It is the creation of new media of flash mobs of cell phone listservs of millions in the streets placards waving billions more seeing through the lies. We are not through our long dark tea time of the soul yet, but were getting there.
Through the global uprising flows a full spectrum of our resistance to Empire. It is a resistance across the scales of time: the urgent need to stop the ongoing wars, occupations and injustices of the world, while envisioning and creating a world in which such transgressions cannot happen in the first place. The balance is no easy feat, but it is one that is beginning to be addressed on a global, ecological, cultural and personal level.
Full Spectrum Resistance is the refusal to accept at face value the prevailing ideas about time and space, and consciousness itself. It is Full Spectrum Resonance with Nature, and its cycles of time.
There are many ways of perceiving time. However our minds have been colonized to view time in a way which reinforces a particular power dynamic. Even basic and arbitrary things like the calendars we follow and the number of hours in a day have their roots in the privatization of the commons, and our dissociation from nature.
If we are to truly find a new way forward, it is time that we begin to question the most fundamentally held assumptions about linear time. It does not take much time to recognize the cycles of life.
In a world where our time is stolen from us, what exactly does a 20th anniversary mean? Perhaps it is a time for us to collectively rethink, resist, and reclaim time itself.
